Your Wi-Fi router can be controlled more than you think. There are tons of things you can do with your router settings which can give greater control and optimization, especially for your use-case. The default configuration of a router is such that it supports all types of connections – office, home, etc. Configuring it according to your needs can give greater security and sometimes, a faster Internet experience.
For configuring a router, you must first login through the Admin page. Every networking router acts like a central hub between all your devices and the internet. It creates a small network in itself, called a subnet. Each device in a subnet is assigned a unique ID, called the Internet Protocol (IP) address. You can connect to the router on its default IP address: 192.168.1.1. You can also connect to other devices by finding out their IP addresses.

- Connect a device to the router through Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. If you’ve forgotten your password and want to reset it, connect a laptop to the router using an Ethernet cable.
- Once connected, open a browser of your choice.
- Enter the following link in your browser: 192.168.0.1 and hit enter.
- You should land on an admin page with a pop up asking for an ID and Password. If that’s not the case, check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at the end.
Enter the ID and Password for the router. If you don’t know the credentials, try:

Once you’ve entered your credentials, hit Login.
You’ve successfully entered the admin page. From here you can configure your router settings. The exact steps for navigating to particular settings depend on the maker of your router. However, following are some important settings (along with where to find them) you should configure to optimize your experience:
SSID and Password.
You can change the ‘name’ of your router and its password. This can be found under the Network header. After changing them, you will have to reconnect to the router.
Maximum Devices Connected
Sometimes you might want to allow only a limited number of connections more bandwidth per device, or maybe you want to increase the number of connections allowed. For either case, you can head over to the Wi-Fi header and change the setting.
You can also limit the speed of your internet connection to prevent using up all the bandwidth at once. This can also be found under the Wi-Fi header.
You can experiment with other settings according to your needs. It is suggested that after the first admin login, you change the default password. This is to prevent anybody else from logging in to your router.
192.168.0.1 FAQ’S – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. The admin page is not opening/the browser keeps on loading the page.
If that is the case, please check your connection. If you’re connecting through Wi-Fi, disconnect and use an Ethernet cable. If it still doesn’t work, try changing the port the Ethernet is connected to on your laptop or router.
2. The ID and Password do not work/I have forgotten the ID and password.
If the given ID and password do not work, read your router’s manual for its default credentials. If they still don’t work or you’ve forgotten them then reset your router. The steps to do that can be found in the User Manual.
3. I got disconnected to my router after applying the settings.
This is perfectly normal. The router resets its settings and disconnects all devices. Connect again with the new credentials.
