At Mariposa Cruises we strive to exceed expectations and provide our guests with the highest levels of quality and service. It’s what sets us apart from our competition and why we are recognized as Toronto’s best recreational cruise by Consumer Choice Award and voted one of the top attractions in Toronto by Trip Advisor. It would be impossible to achieve this without the dedication and hard work that each of our team members exemplifies. For this reason, we want to celebrate our team members and let you get to know them a little bit better.
This month we would like to introduce you to one of our Deckhands – Aizat Umardin.
Originally from Malaysia, Aizat moved to Ottawa with his parents where his father works as a diplomat. He later moved to Toronto to pursue his studies in Hotel Management at George Brown College. Aizat joined the Mariposa Team in April and has been an amazing addition as a Deckhand. His enthusiasm and ability to learn quickly has resulted in successful training and approval as Deckhand on several of our vessels this season. This not only diversifies his role, but makes him a very valuable team member!
Let’s see what Aizat had to say:
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A typical day at work involves me going through a certain checklist of deckhand duties which involves setting up the boat so that all safety equipment is out and ready to go for emergency situations. I also handle the lines of the boat when we leave dock and come back to dock. This is usually the most challenging part of my day.
What’s your favourite thing about your job and working for Mariposa Cruises?
My favourite thing about working for Mariposa Cruises has to be the team I work with. So far it has been a great experience getting to know the company and my work colleagues as they all are great co-workers. And since everyone is so helpful at Mariposa Cruises, it has made my work much more enjoyable.
What do you do when you’re not working at Mariposa Cruises?
I am a student at George Brown College completing my 4 year degree in hospitality business operations. Right now I am going into my fourth and final year. Other than being a student, I am also a passionate football (soccer) fan. I also play all types of sports such as tennis, basketball, badminton, and football.
Who were you cheering for in the recent World Cup? What team do you normally follow?
Although I have no set team or nation that I cheer for during the World Cup, this year I was cheering for Brazil because they have the most solid team. Otherwise I am a fan of Arsenal in the English Premier league.
Do you have a favourite quote or words that you live by?
“If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room” – This quote simply stays in my mind because I believe we should always be on the lookout to learning something new every day.
Who is your role model? Why?
It would have to be French football legend, Thierry Henry. This is because I grew up watching a lot of football (soccer) and he was just an all-round inspiring figure that promoted that dreams are possible with hard work and determination.
If you could charter a boat and take it anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I would probably charter a boat to the Maldives only because I’ve heard great things about that place. Plus it would be a nice getaway.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet? Why?
I would probably want to meet my grandfathers because I never got the chance to get to know them that well.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Aizat as much as we have. There are plenty of other Mariposa team members for you to meet. Be on the lookout each month, as we will be spotlighting a new team member on our Meet the Crew segment on the Captain’s Blog.
