At Mariposa Cruises we strive to exceed expectations and provide our guests with the highest levels of quality and service. It’s what sets us apart from our competition and why we are recognized as Toronto’s best recreational cruise by Consumer Choice Award and voted one of the top attractions in Toronto by Trip Advisor. It would be impossible to achieve this without the dedication and hard work that each of our team members exemplifies. For this reason, we want to celebrate our team members and let you get to know them a little bit better.
This month we would like to introduce you to our Events Manager Lauren Matunin.
A graduate of George Brown’s Special Event Management program, Lauren originally joined Mariposa Cruises as an Event Coordinator.
Applying her knowledge and previous event planning experience, Lauren set out to learn the language of boats. There are many nuances specific to events hosted onboard Mariposa Cruises, including compliance and safety considerations, to Chef’s equipment restrictions and catering schedules.
Lauren proved herself to be a committed, competent and organized talent in a short period of time. She soon earned accolades from our guests and gained the respect of her Mariposa colleagues.
Now as Mariposa Cruises’ Event Manager, Lauren is the communication liaison between our clients and our delivery team, providing exceptional customer care to our clients, working to deadlines to provide critical detail to our delivery team, updating event details and coaching her Events team to excellence.
Lauren is invested in the success of each event and takes pride in her part of delivering the great experience Mariposa Cruises is known for.
Let’s see what Lauren had to say:
When did you start working for Mariposa Cruises?
I started working in the events department with Mariposa in May of 2013.
What is your role at Mariposa Cruises?
I am the Event Manager with Mariposa. What this role entails is overseeing the execution of all private chartered events – anything from weddings, corporate events, school groups, social events, and everything in-between!
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
A typical day is not so typical in the Events department! However, on any given day we can be meeting with numerous clients to coordinate the logistics of their upcoming event, creating banquet event orders to pass along to the various departments to prepare and execute the events, conducting daily meetings with Cruise Managers to ensure set-up and delivery instructions are outlined, and greeting guests as they arrive for their celebrations. On any given sunny summer day, we can have up to 12 different events that need attention and love by myself, the Events department, and our great hospitality staff.
What’s your favourite thing about your job and working for Mariposa Cruises?
By far the best aspect of my job is meeting and working with hundreds of clients annually! Everyone has unique ideas about how they wish to make their celebration the most memorable and I love to hear from them when they have new and innovative ideas that we get to try out onboard! I also consistently receive wonderful feedback from clients following their event regarding how pleased they are with our entire delivery team and it is extremely rewarding to have a team committed to making each celebration special.
What do you do when you’re not working at Mariposa Cruises?
When I am not working, you can usually find me catching a basketball game or catching up on basketball news. I am a diehard Raptors fan #WetheNorth. I also adore the Toronto restaurant scene and am always up for trying the hottest new spots! Good eats and basketball… nothing better.
Who is your role model? Why?
I don’t believe any one person is my role model, but I do have a wonderful family who has shaped me to be the person I am. I have always looked up to my older brothers for guidance in life – so far so good!
If you could charter a boat and take it anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I have such a love for travel, which makes it extremely difficult for me to pick just one place! I have such an extensive bucket list – but if I had to narrow it down to one trip, I would charter a boat to visit Croatia and the Adriatic Sea. I absolutely love the culture in Europe and I’ve heard it is a breathtaking setting to vacation!
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet? Why?
Definitely Michael Jordan because he’s a legend. Or Katy Perry… see below.
What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life? Why?
Katy Perry ANYTHING. She always makes me happy.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Lauren as much as we have. There are plenty of other Mariposa team members for you to meet. Be on the lookout each month, as we will be spotlighting a new team member on our Meet the Crew segment on the Captain’s Blog.
