Meet-the-CrewAt Mariposa Cruises we strive to exceed expectations and provide our guests with the highest levels of quality and service. It’s what sets us apart from our competition and why we are recognized as Toronto’s best recreational cruise by Consumer Choice Award and voted one of the top attractions in Toronto by Trip Advisor. It would be impossible to achieve this without the dedication and hard work that each of our team members exemplifies. For this reason, we want to celebrate our team members and let you get to know them a little bit better.

This month we would like to introduce you to our Administrative Assistant Wendy Procter.

Since 2007 Wendy is the smiling voice that greets our callers. As Mariposa Cruises’ Administrative Assistant/Manager of First Impressions, Wendy is command central and keeps us all organized. And while we could speak to her bazillion daily accomplishments, we’ll just cut to the chase and simply state that her multi-tasking ability is super human.

If there was a competition for managing several phone conversations while engaged with people at her desk, solving frequent scheduling crisis’ & never-ending , stranger-by-the-minute IT issues, all while fixing the printer, preparing reports and organizing the birthday card of the day, we are confident Wendy would take the competition. We can’t even tell you all that she does, she is that good.

Along with her practical, common sense smarts and willingness to help all who ask, Wendy also possesses a wonderful (& necessary) sense of humour. Her loyalty is valued; Her talent admired; Her skills- legendary.

Let’s see what Wendy had to say:

When did you start working for Mariposa Cruises?

January 22, 2007

What is your role at Mariposa Cruises?

Administrative Assistant officially; Manager of First Impressions on my business card; this season and two seasons ago, I have taken on the role of Hospitality Coordinator. But I’ve been known to handle several other roles when needed to fill in.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Busy, busy, busy! No day is really typical. Even after all these years, there is a huge variety in my day. I am usually: answering the phone; answering or forwarding emails for sales inquiries; trouble-shooting IT issues; scheduling staff for Harbour Tours; running down to the boats for one reason or another; going on Tours when an SVMO or extra crew are needed; keeping office supplies in check, as well as office equipment running smoothly; and generally helping out with everything. I pride myself on knowing how to run pretty much every system here. That way I can help when needed.

What’s your favourite thing about your job and working for Mariposa Cruises?

There’s a couple. The people I work with are family to me. I truly think of them all like that! I also love the variety of my job. There is never a dull moment. I’m never bored and the days go by really quickly – and who doesn’t love going on cruises once in a while?

What do you do when you’re not working at Mariposa Cruises?

I like to relax on my balcony and take in the sunsets and spend time with friends. I have a senior cat, two fish tanks and a green thumb. There are plants all over my apartment and flowers on the balcony in summer. I’m also a Huge Nascar fan. I never miss a race, and if I do I PVR it and don’t go on Twitter or Facebook to spoil it and tell me who won until I do watch it! I’m also a fan of Crime Drama TV Shows and Documentaries, especially on Shipwrecks (I know, ironic), Earthquakes, Volcanoes and anything generally geologic!

Do you have a favourite quote or words that you live by?

Hope isn’t the belief that life will always give you what you want; it’s the belief that life will gradually reveal what’s right.

Who is your role model? Why?

I don’t really have one role model. There are so many strong, independent women over the years that I look up to and admire. I married young, divorced young and had to pretty much take care of myself from my early 20’s, so I consider myself to be one of those strong, independent women. Mind you there is always a soft side to us…

If you could charter a boat and take it anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

The west coast of Canada to Whale Watch. I’m a huge advocate for Orca’s and have always dreamt of seeing them in their natural habitat. One day I will get there. I am drawn to water for some reason. I’ve worked by the water for 14 years (eight of them at Mariposa) and even when I’m off, I will come down to the waterfront or go for walks in the Don Valley close to the water.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet? Why?

Jacqueline Kennedy, she was the epitome of grace.

What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life? Why?

Well you won’t know any of my selections as I listen to EBM/Synthpop/Industrial music which is a small genre of music.

  • VNV Nation –Legion,
  • Wolfsheim – Once In A Lifetime,
  • Covenant – Call The Ships To Port,
  • Assemblage 23 – I Am The Rain.

This music came into my life when I moved to Toronto in 1999 and basically changed everything for me.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Wendy as much as we have. There are plenty of other Mariposa team members for you to meet. Be on the lookout each month, as we will be spotlighting a new team member on our Meet the Crew segment on the Captain’s Blog.
