Meet-the-CrewAt Mariposa Cruises we strive to exceed expectations and provide our guests with the highest levels of quality and service. It’s what sets us apart from our competition and why we are recognized as Toronto’s best recreational cruise by Consumer Choice Award and voted one of the top attractions in Toronto by Trip Advisor. It would be impossible to achieve this without the dedication and hard work that each of our team members exemplifies. For this reason, we want to celebrate our team members and let you get to know them a little bit better.

This month we would like to introduce you to one of our Senior Sales Managers Brenda Tucker.

Brenda has been part of the Mariposa team for 17 years and is known for going above and beyond for her clients. Over the years, Brenda has perfected the ability to understand her client’s needs and ensure that their vision for their event is executed to their full satisfaction. Brenda’s commitment to achieving her client’s objectives is only outmatched by her dedication to her family of 4 children.

Let’s see what Brenda had to say:

When did you start working for Mariposa Cruises?

September 1998, just seems like yesterday.

What is your role at Mariposa Cruises?

I am one of their Sales Managers within private programs on board our fleet of six ships.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Some days are longer than others. They involve e-mailing questions to and from my clients, providing estimates, conference calls, addendums to contracts, sourcing entertainment & suppliers, customizing my clients’ programs to create a unique event, working with clients within their budgets & maximizing their ROI.

I meet with clients who want the best experience for their valued clients. I also meet and work with couples looking to host their wedding day with Mariposa Cruises and making it the most memorable day of their lives. I discuss their itinerary outline, meet with our Event Coordinators to detail upcoming events, who in turn start to execute the event. I call new and past clients, and attend networking events.

Consistency, patience and listening are important to understanding the client’s needs and vision. We speak and deal with many cultures. The main objective is the client’s experience and to leave them with a lasting impression and an amazing experience.

What’s your favourite thing about your job and working for Mariposa Cruises?

The reward of having met many wonderful people over the years. I value team work and appreciate our team who are hard-working dedicated people who care! Every day is different, every program is unique. I enjoy building on ROI for clients’ momentum and creating & hosting a great program and experience. Mariposa is your family away from family – 17 years seems like yesterday!

What do you do when you’re not working at Mariposa Cruises?

Now that my children are young adults, I enjoy my free time visiting country markets and heading north. My vacation is generally visiting my brother in Naples yearly. I am a Toronto Maple Leaf Fan – Hockey Night In Canada was always a large part of my life and continues to be today.

Do you have a favourite quote or words that you live by?

I have a few:

“Integrity is choosing your thoughts based on values.”

“You are a year younger than next year.”

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.”

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein

Who is your role model? Why?

I have a few. The first is my mother who is the youngest of 15 children and the only one living of her peers. At her young age of 79 she continues to be vibrant each and every day. Her energy is beyond the unthinkable, her wisdom is sharp, and her ambition is endless. She is an aunt to over 60 nieces and nephews, a grandmother of seven and great grandmother of four.

The second would be my grandmother (on my mother’s side) her name was Emily, she was a very strong focused women, raising 15 children, while my grandfather was away serving in the Navy and the war! She maintained her home, providing a safe and loving home. She was also a midwife. Raising 15 children, her home was immaculate, she took pride in setting her table with china and her menu always consisted of fresh foods daily. She was a very creative woman making her own quilts by hand and pillows made from her sheep’s hair. She had a vibrant personality, amazing wit and a great sense of humour. I have many found memories sitting by the wrought iron stove waiting for her fresh bread, learning to knit since I was age 4.

If you could charter a boat and take it anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?

I would sail to the Coast of Spain to travel the Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James. It is the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in North-Western Spain. Here, legend has it, that the remains of the apostle, Saint James the Great, are buried. It is an estimated 500 mile trail.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet? Why?

I have, been fortunate to meet some of my favourite people. Growing up our Saturday nights were always Hockey Night in Canada on CBC. My favourites became Curtis Joseph, Wendell Clarke, Daryl Sitler and the all time great one, Gretzky, Walter and Wayne. All very modest individuals who followed their passion! Outside of Hockey, I’d like to meet Peter Mansbridge .

I would have liked to have met Steve Jobs, his Stanford Commencement Speech 2005 was one of the most moving speeches.

What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life? Why?

I enjoy a variety of artist and music styles from Classic rock, jazz, and I choose my music depending on my day and also surroundings. I enjoy Rod Stewart, Eagles, Michael B, Celine Dion, Sting, Aerosmith, Tennors, and classics from my youth. Therefore I asked the experts who know me well and know me best, my children.

  • My youngest son Jeffery chose Thunderstruck by AC/DC because “you strike fear in your sales and create challenges.”
  • My eldest daughter Rebecca chose Life Is a Highway because “the road gets rough, you continue to ride the highway of life never giving up, always cheerful.”
  • My youngest daughter Megan chose The Beatles All You Need Is Love because “with love surrounding you, everything around you falls into place.”
  • And last my eldest son Jarrett. Chose Flashdance – What A Feeling because “growing up we would dance together (for fun, enjoying music ) we were taught to follow your dreams no matter what, never to lose sight and always keep dancing.”
  • My personal favourite Bette Midler – Wind Beneath My Wings because my children are my heroes. I have been blessed!!

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Brenda as much as we have. There are plenty of other Mariposa team members for you to meet. Be on the lookout each month, as we will be spotlighting a new team member on our Meet the Crew segment on the Captain’s Blog.
